End of the Year Writing Notebooks

Well... it's that time of year where I start thinking about what to get my little darlins and how to encourage them to keep reading and writing over the summer.

I just saw a great idea over at Little Miss Glamour Goes To Kindergarten. It's a way to kill two birds with one stone! She gives her students Summer Writing Notebooks as a gift. Check out her post by clicking here.

I loved the idea so much that I ran with it! Here's what I ended up with:

I bought composition notebooks at Target. They were 94 cents each. Then, I went to Hobby Lobby to get Rubber Cement glue, stickers and clearance scrapbook paper. I cut the paper to fit and used the rubber cement to glue it to the cover. Then, I made a title for each notebook, printed it, glued it and decorated with stickers.

We will come up with time words as a class when they glue in the writing prompts.

Inside the cover of each, I wrote a note for each of my sweeties. Here is one example:

Then, there are a few that I think could use an ABC chart and a Blends chart. So, I printed them 2 to a page and glued them in on the first page.

If you would like these charts, you can snag them at my TPT store for only 2 dollars! Click here to purchase!

Here is a freebie for you! It includes the title and the prompts in a PowerPoint format so you can edit them. Let me know if you need me to send you the PDF.

Enjoy! Thanks, Little Miss Glamour!

Blog List

Here is a resource that I wanted to share with you... it's a list of teaching blogs by grade level. I created it to share with my school so other teachers could find some great ideas, too! DISCLAIMER: This is by no means a complete list! If your blog is on here it's not because I don't like it... in fact, I had to stop midway through for grades K and 1 because I was afraid it would begin to overwhelm someone who was new to the whole teaching blog thing!

Feel free to use it or add to it if you'd like to share it with your school, as well.

End of the Year Morning Work

The bittersweet end of school is coming soon. Usually at the end of the year, kids are crazy ready for summer... but today was a dream in my class. It really makes the end of the year seem more bitter than sweet.

For the last week or two of school, my team has always done a "Good Things Bag" for morning work. The kids get to write sweet notes to each other and put them in a paper bag that they decorated. It is a nice change for them at this time of year. Here is one of the notes I got in my bag this morning. Just had to share!
"I like it when you let us do crafts they are reley spactaculer"

I love how she said "spactaculer"  (Meaning spectacular) :) We have had multiple mini-lessons on finding and using "WOW words". (I call WOW words "words that make a reader think WOW! that's a great word!") She got it!

Have a great night and a wonderful end of the week!

Ever heard of...

... Swagbucks? Swagbucks is a site where you can earn what they call Swagbucks when you search through their search engine, answer surveys, shop through links on their website at your normal online stores, participate in special offers, and more. You can then purchase things with the Swagbucks you earn in their store. My favorite thing to earn is a $5 Amazon giftcard. They are only 450 Swagbucks, and don't take too long to earn. This is perfect for us teachers because Amazon.com usually has the cheapest or close to the cheapest price on anything you could want for your classroom. I don't spend too much time on Swagbucks, but when I have a few minutes here and there, I do and then I can get things for free! Want to join? Click on the button that says "Sign-up" on the Swagbucks widget on this post or at the bottom of this page.

NEW Writing Interactive Notebook Pack

As the year is winding down, I know that many of us are thinking of what we would like to do differently next year, and what we can do to prepare for next year. One of my big projects has been to create my own Writing Interactive Notebook customized to the way I like to use it.

For the past 2 weeks, I have worked for many more hours than I'd like to admit on my Writing Interactive Notebook Pack. I like to call the notebooks WINs (Writing Interactive Notebooks). I am so excited to use these next year! Below you can see what my notebooks include:

If you want to see it all, click here and download the free preview. I cannot tell you how excited I am about using these next year! It is my new favorite thing in my TPT store!

End of the Year Evaluation

This year I decided I wanted to send home an evaluation form so the parents could give me some honest feedback. I thought I would share the form with you in case you'd like to edit it. I left it in a Microsoft Word Format so you can edit it. If you'd like it in PDF from, let me know and I'll email it to you!

I feel like I am neglecting this blog a bit, too, but you know how the end of the year goes! Sorry if you're not feeling like you're getting enough from my blog!

Fact Family Garden

Have you seen the idea of creating Fact Family Flowers? Well I did, and I would love to link you to the two blogs that I saw it on, but I can't find them. Let me know if you have the links so I can share it! Found one of them now! Click here to find it on Primary Inspired. You can also view her latest ideas by clicking on the button below. I also found the idea on another blog probably in January, so let me know if that's you so I can link to you, too!

Photobucket<br>

Anyway, we were reviewing fact families a few weeks ago and I showed my students the fact family flowers that they were going to make. My kids, being as creative as they are, wanted to turn it into a garden. So, now we have rocks, ladybugs, butterflies, squash, strawberries, watermelon, flowers and more in our hallway! So cute if I do say so myself! Haha... can you believe that they wanted to make a squash??? Gotta love first graders!

Below you can see the garden created by my class and one of my teammate's classes. We just put them all together to make one big garden between our doors.

Writing Interactive Notebooks

I promised I would post about our Writing Interactive Notebooks (The WINs) and here it is! I'm not sure I'm in love with this set up for 1st grade, but I'd only tweak a few things.

Here is our notebook. I use a folder with brads to hold the pages. I don't love this because brads are a pain if you ever need to add to it. We use garage sale labels to make the tabs that you will see in the pictures below.

It has a pocket on the front with a green sticker for things that are being worked on...

... and a pocket in the back with a red sticker for things that are finished.

We have a table of contents with four sections; Tools For Writers, Words for Writers, Ideas for Writers and Reflection. Reflection is the section I haven't been able to use much with 1st graders, so I will be creating my own table of contents this weekend to use for next year.

Tools for Writers is the blue tab. It contains pages for our students to paste in icons from different mini-lessons we do throughout the year.

Words for Writers contains an ABC chart, personal word wall and a few different word charts for them to use. I plan to add extra pages here for the Phonics Friends word banks and I will change up the personal word wall to add more room for new words. I will also add a page for WOW words.

Ideas for Writers is where I have blank pages for circle maps as they brainstorm ideas for their writing.

That's the tour of our WIN! What ideas do you have for improvement, or what do you do that works well for you?
